FaneKantsini: Mezcal Rooted in Community, Culture, and Conservation (Spanish)
FaneKantsini is more than mezcal, it's a movement grounded in tradition, sustainability, and collective identity. Founded by Sosima Olivera Aguilar, a fourth-generation maestra mezcalera from the Chontal region of Oaxaca, the cooperative honors mezcal’s origins as a sacred, seasonal drink deeply tied to land, family, and ritual.
The name FaneKantsini comes from a local legend and reflects the project’s values: respect for nature, shared labor, and intergenerational knowledge. Since 2012, the Cooperativa de Mezcaleros Chontales Tres Colibrí has worked to protect endemic maguey species, promote agrochemical-free farming, and cultivate a culture of cooperation—especially in Sola de Vega, a region now pressured by commercial mezcal interests.
Rather than scale production, FaneKantsini focuses on quality, seasonality, and environmental care. They harvest only in dry months, use fewer than 15 tons of maguey annually, and preserve biodiversity by growing agave alongside traditional crops like corn and marigolds.
Through community outreach, shared meals, and respectful dialogue, FaneKantsini invites others to protect mezcal's cultural and ecological roots. Every bottle represents not just a spirit, but a way of life, one that values balance, patience, and collective strength.
