Sósima Olivera Featured as a "Joya de Oaxaca" for Her Legacy in Mezcal and Sustainability (Spanish)
We’re proud to share that Maestra Mezcalera Sósima Olivera was named a “Joya de Oaxaca”, a well-deserved recognition of her work preserving the cultural, environmental, and artisanal traditions of mezcal in her native region.
Born and raised in San Miguel Chapultepec, Oaxaca, Sósima was introduced to the world of mezcal at a young age. By the age of seven, she was already learning how to taste and understand the nuances of this ancestral spirit, which has been crafted in her family for generations.
As one of the few women leading mezcal production in Oaxaca, Sósima stands out not only for her mastery of the craft, but for her deep commitment to ethical production and environmental sustainability. She is a passionate advocate for protecting endemic agave species and warns against the dangers of overharvesting brought on by mezcal’s global popularity.
Through her work and her cooperative Tres Colibrí, she continues to empower her community while producing exceptional small-batch mezcal under the brand FaneKantsini. Each bottle is a testament to tradition, respect for nature, and the power of local knowledge.
Sósima’s story is one of resilience, integrity, and deep cultural pride — and we’re honored to partner with her in bringing her mezcal to new audiences.
